I am an amateur when it comes to cameras, camcorders and the like. I'm basically a point and shoot type of customer that wants a good quality camcorder for recording our families activities. This is an outstanding camcorder for the money! First and foremost it takes very good quality videos. While I'm sure the videos aren't the highest of hi-def possible keep in mind this is a $300 and change camcorder. The video quality far outshines your standard camcorder. The two other features - the time elapse and the motion detection both work very well, although outside of surveillance I'm not sure what the use of either is. The motion detection might be handy at something like a basketball game where you would point it at one end of the court and only capture the action when it's on that end. The only con I had with the camera wasn't really the camera's fault. I couldn't get the Patriot 16GB memory card to work consistently. I bought the Transcend cards and they work perfectly.

Product Description

The XA10 Professional Camcorder allows users to record up to 24 hours of clear high definition video to a 64GB internal flash drive or to two SDXC-compatible memory slots. With Relay Recording, the camcorder automatically switches video recording from the internal drive to the SD memory cards when the memory becomes full.
The best of both worlds
By Richard Golstein
It is unbelievable how this camera can be so compact, and yet so pro.

The removable handle is brilliant!
When it's in place you have XLR microphone inputs and audio level controls, and flexibility in shooting angles.
When it is removed, it feels just like any consumer mini hand-held camera that you might take on a family outing - yet still has the same video quality!

For years I used the semi-pro Canon GL-1. It did a great job (as far as a Standard Definition camera) of allowing pro-quality video to be procured from a smaller device. You can't beat the a larger lens for low-light performance and video quality. It, however, lacked some important features, and manual control that are important for pro video. For example, manual audio control was lacking. To get such features, you needed to move up to a shoulder mounted camera like the XL-1 - which had a great lens, made great video, but wasn't something you would bring to the park with the kids. Forgetting the price difference for a moment - who wants to lug around a shoulder mounted camera when you are taking video of your family? Over the last few years, the cameras have gotten smaller, the manual controls in newer cameras have increased - but I haven't seen anyone 'put it all together' like Canon has with the XA-10.

The XA10 has the same lens and sensor used in larger Canon cameras.

In addition, it records video to an internal flash drive, AND has two SD card slots. This makes it ready to start recording on the spot, and also suitable for longer events and where the highest quality recording modes are used, where you need to swap out multiple cards. It even allows you to record to two devices at once, allowing a backup copy to be made in real time.

I am so pleased with this camera, and I have just scratched the surface of its available features.

To sum it up - I am looking forward to shooting pro quality work related videos with this camera, AND bringing it to Disneyworld!

Panasonic HDC-TM900K 3 MOS 3D Compatible

Panasonic HDC-TM900K 3 MOS 3D Compatible Camcorder with 32GB Internal Flash Memory (Black)

By Robert J. Nagy
As a TV Broadcast Engineer, I know when things are "right". In any design, there have to be compromises.
All of these small cameras are compromises. I bought the TM-900 for one reason -it's 1000 line resolution
in 1080P. You can't touch that for at least another $2K. What I was surprised about is that Panasonic went
all-out trying to top the competition. Say, compared with a Canon M41 (comparable price range) the Panasonic
has a FAR better viewfinder and LCD screen. The Canon doesn't have any focus ring and the TM's is superb and
versatile. The controls for manual adjustment are light-years better on the Panasonic. The TM has Person
identification, not just face ID. This one is amazing- the TM allows you to use the camera's inside processing
chips while you edit with their editor- to hyper-speed the video conversion when making DVD's and Blu-Rays.
That's progressive engineering. The TM also is just beautiful-looking while the Canon is totally low-end (the
camera body itself).
I bought both -why? Because the low-light performance of the TM is only average. It's fine and in most shooting
you'd do well. The Canon M41 has their new HD pro sensor (same at their two best pro-consumer cams)and sees
exactly as well as humans do. It's amazingly good at low-light. the TM also has a top quality of 17MBS in it's
AVHCD regular HD recording. the Canon does 24MBS. The Canon is superior when shooting in 1080i (it's top level).
The TM's best 1080i AVHCD level of 17MBS is very good...excellent.. just not superb. Kick it up a notch to 1080P
and you're speechless. Wow! It's a high-res still photograph-that's moving. But remember, 1080P on the TM is
actually above the HD spec. Uh huh. So, your editor might not handle it. You TV might not handle it. When you
render 1080P from the TM onto a AVHCD DVD to play HD on your BLue-Ray player, it is amazing looking.
Also, you can play the native video files out of a TM-900 and M41 directly out of a good Hard-drive media player.
The editing and storage software with the TM is great. It really is. Smooth operator and burns out DVD's and
AVHCD disks with ease. So, the TM is my go-to camera and the Canon is used only if I'm shooting in natural low-light.
2.5 thumbs up on the Panasonic.. a real Pro-sumer camera at a great price. Bravo Panasonic.

Canon VIXIA HF G10

Canon VIXIA HF G10

By M. Gutierrez
Since I was a little kid with an 8mm film camera, I have tried in vain to make videos that had the look and sound of professional TV and movie productions.

I failed in many ways, many times. Sometimes due to my meager skills, sometimes due to the short comings of my cameras.
The Vixia HF G10 changes that. I can no longer blame my equipment.

Let me say now, I am not a professional video/film maker. I have had no formal training. My videos are for my own enjoyment, I record special moments and travels for myself and my family. I seldom display or publish videos on the Web.

I placed my order on Jan. 5th, the day of Canon's new product announcement. Amazon was great, as usual, and kept my pre-order updated until the camera was released. I received it last week, and was immediately struck by the quality of the images.
So far, I have just been learning about the G10, and its features. I've made some stunning video studies of my flower and vegetable garden. Whether played back on the camera's LCD screen, or on my big screen HD television, the images are sharp, clear, vibrant, and have the look of a professional documentary. In addition, the on camera microphones are far superior to any camcorder I've ever used. I have some large wind chimes near my garden and the playback of audio through my TV is astonishing. I have a Sennheiser MKE 400, but have not used it as yet, the on-camera sound is excellent.

What I like: Coming from a DV tape camera, the memory cards are the best thing since sliced bread. The 'touch screen' is very good. I did not think I would like it, but it is easy to use, responds well, and the menu system is somewhat intuitive. The Manual mode provides tons of recording and exposure options. In Programmed mode the camera will make several automated exposure adjustments as the scene or lighting changes. In Av mode the DOF control is excellent, and there are built-in ND filters available in Av mode that have already come in handy. I have not used Tv mode, but in full Manual the controls are easy to access and perform as well as my Canon EOS still camera.
Three modes of Auto focus and excellent, easy to use Manual focus. Zoom speed adjustment, very cool.
Cinema Mode: Sounds like a gimmick, works like a charm. The primary feature in Cinema Mode is a set of 9 filters for various cinematic effects. I like them all, and look forward to using them to highlight my scenes in my videos. It would be easy to over use these, I think. But the Nostalgic, Sepia, and Old Movie filters will surely get used, as will the Dramatic B&W. I'm thinking the Vivid would work on panoramic landscapes.
The whole memory card/built-in memory thing is wonderful. Transfer to a Win 7 PC is easy and fast. So far I'm sticking with the MXP 24P (true 1920 x 1080). It is the luxury I paid for, and I'm going to use it.

Things I don't need: Still photos - nice but I have a great still camera. In camera editing and Decorations: just fluff to me. I guess these things have market appeal, but why does Canon add them to a camera aimed at the upper end video customer?

Things I don't like: The initial impression that the G10 is a small, cheap-looking, plastic camcorder (I got over that when I saw how it performed). The shallow angle of the lens opening prevents adding after market wide angle conversion lens; apparently the only lens that currently fits is the very expensive Canon lens. The BP808 battery is small, and you need 2, or a larger BP819. There is no separate battery charger included, so you need one of those, too. The hot shoe is the Canon mini-shoe, so you need an adapter to use after market mikes or lights, or buy the expensive Canon accessories.

My still camera is a Canon 5D Mk2. It has fantastic video performance as well as awesome still image performance. I wanted the G10 to give me more flexibility for different situations; run-and-gun, handheld kind of stuff, ad hoc filming which I find difficult with the 5D Mk2.
That's about all I can think of now. I would buy this camcorder again without hesitation. I would and do recommend it to anyone looking to take that next step up in video making.

I'll try to post a short video soon, showing some of the images from the Vixia HF G10.
